Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) is a Rural Electric Cooperative serving parts of Jefferson, Grainger, Hamblen, and Sevier counties in East Tennessee. We currently have an opportunity for a Substation Technician in our New Market, Tennessee office.  AEC offers a highly competitive total compensation package.

The Substation Technician participates in the operation, maintenance and construction of electrical primary and distribution substation facilities, and distribution line equipment of the Cooperative. The Substation Technician ensures work is completed in compliance with the standard practices of Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC), Rural Utilities Services (RUS), and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Insure that all substation facilities are maintained in accordance with AEC, RUS, NESC, federal, state, local and other standards or regulations.
  2. Make monthly substation inspections including visual inspections of all equipment; record operating data; exercise breakers, reclosers, regulators, and load tap changing transformers as required; and check for substation discrepancies.
  3. Install, repair, remove, test, program and/or maintain 13kV, 69kV, or 161kV substation equipment to include the following:
  • Power transformers to include associated accessories (fans, tap changers, pumps, etc.)
  • Circuit breakers, reclosers with associated equipment and controls
  • Substation protective equipment – Line relays, control panels, etc.
  • SCADA and associated radio and fiber optic communication systems.
  • Battery systems
  • Instrument transformers
  • Down-line equipment and controls – recloser, capacitor, regulator, etc.

 

  1. Operate substation equipment as required; perform switching operations; and operate breakers, reclosers, fuse disconnects, and mobile substation equipment.
  2. Perform routine and diagnostic testing of substation equipment as required including protective relays, reclosers, circuit breakers, transformers, regulators, current and potential transformers utilizing appropriate test equipment and procedures; assist engineering personnel in the testing and setting of substation equipment as required.
  3. Load, unload, and handle material, equipment, tools, and supplies. Procure material and equipment in the established manner, and cleans and maintains equipment as prescribed. 
  4. Perform all duties in accordance with established safety practices.
  5. Work overtime as required including reporting during emergency or outage conditions

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2-5 years experience in industrial maintenance, electronics or electrical field
  • Experience as a substation technician or in a utility a plus
  • Associates degree or certificate from an accredited college, vocational or technical school in electronics, engineering technology or a related field preferred

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License (Class D).    Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) desirable but not required.
  • Must maintain an insurable driving record.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Regular on time attendance is required
  • Knowledgeable of the standard practices, tools, and terminology of the electrical power industry and the Cooperative’s transmission and distribution system
  • Technical utility knowledge of electrical theory, switching, loading; skills and abilities to perform applicable device and field testing using Cooperative furnished test equipment
  • Learn and utilize various computer software programs, including but not limited to timekeeping systems, mapping systems and various RTU, control and protective relay programming software.
  • Ability to read elementary and schematic drawing and to troubleshoot and wire devices following the drawings
  • Ability to work above ground and in close proximity to potentially lethal voltages in normal and adverse conditions.
  • Ability to effectively read and follow operations and safety manuals.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding AEC proprietary information
  • Must be able to work with all departments of the Cooperative, outside contractors and agencies, other utilities and members with which the Cooperative has contact

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The position requires working outside in varying weather conditions
  • The work required in this position poses a potential risk of electrical shock
  • Requires ability to work above ground to heights of 30 feet
  • Regularly exposed to equipment and devices with moving parts
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
    • stand, walk, climb, balance, sit, bend, stoop, kneel
    • use hands to finger, handle or feel
    • reach further than arm’s length, work below waist level, work above shoulder level
    • operate power tools, machinery and motorized vehicles and equipment
    • lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 50 pounds
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally:
    • Required to lift, carry, push and/or pull over 100 pounds with assistance
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud
  • The position requires specific safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which must be used properly at all times

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Full time residence must be within 45 minutes of the Cooperative main office within 90 days of hire.

We currently have an opportunity for an IT Systems Administrator in our New Market, Tennessee office.  AEC offers a highly competitive total compensation package.

 The IT Systems Administrator participates in planning, implementing, securing, documenting, maintaining, and operating the Cooperative’s network, server, desktop, and storage infrastructure.

 This is a full-time position with the opportunity for a hybrid work structure following a training period.  

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports (e.g., builds, deploys, hardens, documents, trouble shoots) Windows Server infrastructure in a virtualized VMware environment with focus on: Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file system permissions/sharing.
  • Implements and supports Office 365 environment (e.g., Exchange, OneDrive, Azure AD, Teams).
  • Administers or responsible for IT infrastructure including email, SCCM, WSUS, AAA, web filter, storage, anti-virus, multifactor authentication, email filter, telephony, firewalls, patching, updates, IPS, IDS, wireless, hardware/software licenses, and policies.
  • Interfaces with employees, vendors and contractors for troubleshooting, problem resolution, service improvement, service design, installation, and projects regarding all software and hardware related to IT infrastructure.
  • Responsible for system backups/restores (e.g., Datto).
  • Deploys and monitors systems and provides information and statistics and/or acts on system performance and capacity alerts for items such as CPU, RAM, storage, etc. to ensure that server and storage infrastructure has adequate capacity, reliability, and availability.
  • Manages Mobile Device Management platform (e.g., MaaS360).
  • Documents system designs and architectures using tools such as Microsoft Visio and Excel.
  • Periodically works evenings and weekends to support upgrades and system maintenance activities.
  • Participates in on-call rotation, providing support for all IT infrastructure and applications.
  • Stays abreast of rapid changes in technology by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications; maintaining professional networks and participating in professional organizations
  • Serves as Tier 2 support for technical needs of Tier 1 IT personnel and Cooperative end users. This will include answering how-to questions, providing system and network status, troubleshooting various technologies, and escalating issues when necessary.
  • Provides education and training to employees on various IT topics
  • Follows standard procedures using available tools to complete requests with minimal assistance
  • Follows all company and safety policies, rules and regulations
  • May require reporting to work outside of normal hours to assist with emergency or outage conditions

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, IT, MIS, or related field
  • At least two of the following active certifications. Equivalent or higher-level certifications acceptable.
    • VMware Certified Professional 6 (VCP 6)
    • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
    • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
    • ISC(2) Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP)
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience with maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting various technology environments.
  • Prefer deep knowledge of Microsoft Enterprise Services, networking, virtualization, cloud (e.g., Azure, AWS), and storage technologies.
